AFL: Lions coach Voss will finish at season’s end

The Brisbane Lions today announced that coach Michael Voss will not have his contract renewed come seasons end.

Voss took over the coaching reins from Leigh Matthews at the end of the 2008 season, and took the Lions to finals in the 2009 season.  It is reported the club offered Voss the opportunity to coach out the year, but he is believed to have declined. In March, not many people would have foreseen this game to be much entertainment.  The Gold Coast Suns, entering their third year in the competition, have now exceeded all expectations, and have taken the long handle to the likes of powerhouse teams Hawthorn and Essendon.  Against another struggling team in the Brisbane Lions, the Suns shape up as a real contender at the Gabba. Season Overview Preview

Some timely performances from the Lions youth brigade and a string of wins saw the struggling 2001-2003 premiers find some late form to finish 13th in 2012.

Considered to be something of a pretender team for several years now, Lions fans started to claw their way back out of their hiding holes, as a plethora of injuries saw many key players out for large chunks of last season.  The shining light for the club was the way in which the likes of Dayne Zorko, Tom Rockliff and Daniel Rich in the midfield stepped up a gear to support the veterans and new players.
