The forecast morning rain never showed, allowing Springfield Park to play host to a dry but soft surface, as the Whitehorse Pioneers fell at a hurdle from the ruthless Park Orchards Sharks, and going down 12.10 (82) to 17.19 (121).

The scoreboard, however, belied the seven goal blitz slammed on by the Pioneers into the wind in the opening term.

Such is the roar from the mighty Panther Pit and Morton Park, people have to stop for a second to listen.

Redemption is on the minds of both Brisbane Lions and Adelaide fans this weekend, with neither side posting a win in round one.

Adelaide were beaten at home by Essendon, while the Lions were huge fancies to beat the Western Bulldogs in Melbourne, but ultimately succumbed to not being able to run out the four quarters.

After a superb pre-season competition, the Lions wanted to start season 2013 off with a bang-a goal which proved to be unachievable.  Hope, however, may lay in store at the Gabba in front of loyal hometown fans.

Season Overview Preview

Some timely performances from the Lions youth brigade and a string of wins saw the struggling 2001-2003 premiers find some late form to finish 13th in 2012.

Considered to be something of a pretender team for several years now, Lions fans started to claw their way back out of their hiding holes, as a plethora of injuries saw many key players out for large chunks of last season.  The shining light for the club was the way in which the likes of Dayne Zorko, Tom Rockliff and Daniel Rich in the midfield stepped up a gear to support the veterans and new players.
